In a Blink
2003 - Present
Through a series of diptychs, “In a Blink” pairs my early portraits of my teenage children and their peers with portraits of the same subjects a decade later.
From my perspective as a mother, the stages of a child’s life move at a staggering pace. As if by magic, my children transformed into teenagers, and then into young adults. I’ve experienced this phenomenon much like Mrs. Darling did in Peter Pan, when she “put her hand to her heart and cried, ‘Oh, why can’t you remain like this for ever!’”
At the same time though, I see myself in them. I know they have some of the same secrets and doubts that I had when leaving my own childhood behind. This project is the result of memories of my personal navigation through those fragile, bewildering years, and the perception of that time moving at once slowly and at lightning speed.
Using both visual and perceived cues from the original photos as reference, I create new, more staged versions for the adult images. In this way I hope to convey my astonished view of this deeply complex chapter in our lives.
Zooming out from a single moment to a decade-long span, I offer my musings on the past, the future, and the echoes which resonate through our time on earth.
